Dwayne Elmore Cumberbatch today pleaded guilty to a theft charge, two months after he made his first appearance in court.
The 29-year-old unemployed man with no fixed place of abode, admitted before Magistrate Douglas Frederick to stealing a Dakine laptop bag worth $159.99 belonging to Duty Free Caribbean Holdings Limited, on September 30.
He had pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared in court in October and was remanded to HMP Dodds.
Prosecutor Sergeant Neville Reid said Cumberbatch entered the store and was observed by security walking and constantly looking towards the cameras.
He was then seen taking the bag from the shelf and exiting the store. Cumberbatch was stopped in front the store by security personnel who told him what they saw, and he was arrested after the bag was recovered.
Addressing the court today, Cumberbatch said he had listed himself as having no fixed place of abode after his first run-in with the law. He said his brush with the law had reduced his mother to tears, “so I take it upon myself not to give an address.”
“But I live with my mother,” he explained.
Cumberbatch went on to admit to his drug use. “I will tell you the truth. I does do drugs – I smoke marijuana and cocaine. I duh want the bag to carry my lunch. I didn’t mean to do it, but it happened.”
Frederick told Cumberbatch that he was willing to give him the help he needed, but he would have to make sacrifices.
“That is the drugs that are talking and we need to stop that. I know that Christmas is coming up, but you have to make the sacrifice. Are you willing to do that?” the magistrate asked.
“Yes, Sir,” Cumberbatch replied.
Frederick then moved Cumberbatch from HMP Dodds to the Psychiatric Hospital for a three-week assessment.
“You have a lot of potential, so let’s work on it to get a new lease on life,” the magistrate said.
