A Bridgetown magistrate yesterday placed a young St Michael man on probation for a year and also ordered him to undergo drug rehabilitation.
The sentence was imposed on Darius Anthony Perch, 20, of #8 Regent Hill, Pine, St Michael, after he admitted to possession of cannabis.
The prosecutor told Magistrate Douglas Frederick that the Police Tactical Response Unit was conducting an operation in the Pine area on December 11, when they saw some people in the general area of Academic Sports Bar.
A strong scent of marijuana was permeating the air, and the crowd dispersed when they saw the police, but Perch remained.
That aroused the suspicion of lawmen who requested a search, which Perch consented to.
Thirteen paper wrappings containing vegetable matter were found in his pocket.
“This is my herb officer,” he told the police when asked to account for the drug, which weighed 7.5 grammes and had a $35 street value.
In the dock yesterday, he told the magistrate: “At the time, I had it for my personal use.”
Frederick then imposed the sentence after considering Perch’s early guilty plea and his antecedents.
