A game high 25 points from Combermere forward Theo Greenidge led his side to a close 57-55 victory against Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) played yesterday on Clapham Court in Wildey, St Michael.
Whenever these two teams meet there is always fireworks and they did not disappoint in the ongoing Massy United Insurance National Sports Council Under-19 Schools Basketball League.
SJPP held the momentum in the first three quarters leading Combermere 16-14, 30-27 and 45-41.
However, the lads from Waterford delivered when it mattered most to clinch the contest by a mere two points, thanks to efforts by David Walkes with 11 and Jamon Phillips with ten, the only two players to reach double figures.
Three other players chipped in for Combermere, Nicholas Hoyte-five, Krishna Quintyne-four and Jerrell Alleyne with two.
Despite a top scores of 20 from Zachary Cave, who eventually fouled out, and Delan Willie 13 for SJPP, it was not enough to prevent the defending champions Combermere from capturing another preliminary win.
Yesterday’s match was the final one for 2016, the competition will resume sometime early next year.
