St Michael North-West just edged St Michael West-Central 1-0 thanks to a scorcher scored by striker Nathan Worrell this evening at Passage Road.
With everything still to play for, the National Sports Council and Youth Development Community Under-17 Football Tournament still in its early stages, St Michael North West with top attackers like Kavian Inniss and Nickneco Marshall were assertive from the start.
Coming into today’s game, both teams needed a win, West-Central having played three, two draws and a loss, while North-West had one win and a draw.
North-West was more dominant in the first half but were unable to get pass West-Central custodian Renaldo Roberts, who made a number of saves in front the nets to keep his side on level terms.
During the second half, West-Central made life difficult for North-West, slowing the pace down to ensure Inniss and Marshall were kept quiet.
As the game went on North-West found new rhythm, Inniss in particular, taking aim at the goal he was just off target, then superbly denied by Roberts.
The share volume of attempts made by Inniss, many presumed at least one would have snuck past Roberts. But to the surprise of North-West and their supporters, it was West-Central that found the back of the nets.
Kamal Gill eliminated North-West defenders with a deft pass to Worrell unmarked inside the 18-yard box who buried his offering two minutes before the end of the match for the winner.
As it stands in the preliminaries, defending champions St George South are on 12 points leading the Southern Zone having played four games unbeaten. They are closely followed by Christ Church East-Central on nine points and Christ Church South on four.
The only other teams in double figures are from the Central Zone, St Michael South and St Michael Central both tied on 12 points with one game in hand. St Michael East have also played well and are in third on ten.
Not one team from the Northern Zone have made it into double digits with St Peter leading the way with eight, St Andrew on seven while St James South and St Lucy are jointly tied on five.
St Michael West are ahead in the Western Zone on seven, St Michael South-Central six and St Michael West-Central, winners of today’s game, trail with five points.
Finally St Phillip North and St Phillip South are tied on six in the Eastern Zone and behind them are St John on three.
