Teachers, students, parents, guardians, old scholars and well-wishers were present at The St Michael School Wednesday to join in the celebrations, as that Martindale’s Road, St Michael institution toasted its athletes for their achievements at this year’s Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championship (BSSAC).

The boys of the school won their first ever championship since the school went co-educational in 1987. The names of the likes of Matthew Clarke, Aaron Worrell, Darian Clarke, Nathan Fergusson, Antoni Hoyte-Small, Seth Edwards and Kyle Gale will forever be etched in the history books of the school. The athletes were coached by former top Barbadian athlete Gabriel Burnett.

The young track and field stars were praised by the school’s administrators and encouraged to not rest on their laurels but to go after further success in the coming years.

The young ladies of the school also had cause for great celebration.

After initially finishing fourth last weekend, they got the news Wednesday that they had instead finished in third position. The mix-up had been as a result of an error in the points tabulation with The St Michael School receiving 221.33 points and edging Harrison College by 0.5 points. The St Michael School girls thus finished behind winners Christ Church Foundation and second placed Springer Memorial.

The release from the BSSAC organizers stated: “After identifying a discrepancy in the points tally – which was pointed out by our resident statistician and former head of the P.E. department, Mrs Jennifer Swanston-Jones – the BSSAC Office made a major correction to the official points standings issued last Friday at the end of BSSAC 2017 Championships. Two schools have been affected by this change. The BSSAC office, after rectifying the discrepancy, is now awarding to The St Michael School girls’ team 3rd place in the 2017 BSSAC Championships. The St Michael School girls will now finish on 221.33 points, 0.5 points ahead of Harrison College.”
