A 50-year-old who admitted today to stealing four bars of chocolate has four weeks to pay the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court a $500 fine.
Anderson Ricky Hoyte of 2nd Avenue, Bird’s River, Deacons Road, St Michael appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant this afternoon and confessed to taking the items worth $29.28 from JG’s Wholesale earlier today.
He was observed by security personnel in the store going to the shelf where the chocolates were, taking them up and placing them in the “crotch of his pants”. He then proceeded in the direction of the cashier but walked past, and he was stopped by the security guard.
A search was requested and the chocolates were found in the leg of the extra pants Hoyte was wearing. Police were called in, he was interviewed and he admitted to taking the items.
“No restitution order will be granted,” the magistrate ruled after prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons outlined the facts.
Hoyte was quick to offer an apology for his actions.
“I am sorry for the offence, Ma’am. I am asking for the leniency of the court,” the man, who has previous offences, said.
However Cuffy-Sargeant pointed out that Hoyte had “quite a history for similar offences under the Theft Act”, including “13 to 14 convictions for theft and several other offences”.
“To your credit, your last offence was in 2012,” the magistrate pointed out before imposing the fine on Hoyte, whose criminal activity began in 1984.
If he fails to pay the money, he will spend six months in jail.
