For the first time ever, soca heavyweights, Machel Montano and Bunji Garlin, will grace the stage together in Barbados at a concert to take place during the busy Crop Over wrap-up weekend.
At the launch of the 1Love event, it was announced that Machel, Bunji and his wife, Fay-ann Lyons, will headline the show to be held at the Concorde Experience on August 6, with their bands Monk Monte and Vikings.
The two have been long-time rivals, but put this aside this year during Carnival in their native Trinidad when they performed together during Machel Monday. They subsequently collaborated on a single called Buss Head.
Machel and Bunji, who were on hand at the Crane Hotel for the launch on Tuesday, promised Bajans a spectacular show. Machel said he was looking forward to the third show under the brand, especially since the main focus would be love and unity.
“This Crop Over is going to be a huge Crop Over. So to come in to celebrate a show like 1love is great. This is a celebration we need to show the world the beauty of our islands and the beauty of our people. I’m very honoured to be doing this show for the third time,” Machel said.
He added: “You know when Machel comes, I like to come with something special. The first year we had Rihanna in the rain and that was a moment of love I would never forget. The second year we tried to focus on the connection to the Afro beat that was happening worldwide.
“This year, the show is going to be even more spot on with one love being celebrated in Trinidad for carnival with Bunji and I doing the Buss Head collaboration. This is a mission that’s very close to our hearts. We want to remind everyone that at the core of it, it’s about love and unity.”
Bunji said he too was excited to be performing at the show.
“Official thank you not only to the official organizers of the event but also to the citizens of Barbados for allowing something like this to happen on your territory. I think it’s important that Barbados is one of the places that this happens. When I say this, I mean the collaboration between myself and Machel Montano and the other artistes,” he said.
“With all the travelling of the artistes back and forth between the islands, to see something like this come to fruition, I think it’s really going to be something to witness. If you know anyone that missed it the first two times, please inform them not to miss it the third time. I think Crop Over is going to be a great time. I think this is my first time being here right into the Crop Over season so I’m looking forward to that,” Bunji added.
Trinidadian artiste Voice, who is the reigning Soca Monarch, will also be performing at the show. He was at the launch and also said he was looking forward to the show.
Also performing will be Hypasounds. The other artistes will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets went on sale from today.
