Members of the 2017 Barbados Culinary Team left the island this morning in high spirits, headed to Miami to represent the island at this year’s Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s (CHTA) Taste of the Caribbean, the region’s premier culinary competition and showcase.
They are: Chefs Damian Leach, Willis Griffith, Kirk Ruck, Andre Nurse, Javon Cummins and Ron Maynard; Junior Chef Nicolas Ifill and Mixologist Ryan Adamson. The team is accompanied by Team Manager Henderson Butcher, Team Training Assistant Glenroy Alleyne and Bartender Training Manager Jamaal Bowen.
Barbados will be competing against 13 other Caribbean islands during the event which runs fromJune 2 to 6. Team members will also have the opportunity to broaden their skills and techniques by participating in a number of innovative and educational seminars for food and beverage professionals.
Butcher explained that the team just completed months of training in preparation for Taste of the Caribbean and was ready for the competition.
“We have taken them through some serious training which they will now take with them to the competition and deliver Caribbean cuisine in an international style,” he said.
“We have had lots of help from sponsors and a number of persons who passed through the training sessions and gave advice, which we were grateful for. We are now at the point where we will be delivering very proudly for Barbados.”
Chairman of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), Roseanne Myers, wished the team good luck.
“Though I won’t be there with you in person when you compete, I will be there in spirit and want to wish you the very best as you fly that Barbados flag very high. We hope that you will come back with the gold that you deserve,” she told the team members.
The BHTA’s chief executive officer Rudy Grant left the island ahead of the team earlier this week to attend CHTA Board meetings and to lend support to the culinary team.
