Community service for teen who slapped schoolboy

A teenager who appeared in a Bridgetown court Thursday for slapping a schoolboy in the face now has to complete 120 hours of community service successfully if he wants to maintain a clean criminal record.

Jevon Obrien Jaffery Richardson, 17, of Freehill, St Michael pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting Anderson Kellman Jr on June 7.

Sergeant Martin Rock told Magistrate Douglas Frederick that Kellman, a 14-year-old student, was walking towards a bus stop in the Walmer Lodge, Black Rock, St Michael area sometime after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when he saw Richardson walking with another person.

Kellman looked in their direction and Richardson asked the schoolboy why he did so. In response, the teen reportedly told Richardson “good afternoon”, but as he continued on his way he was slapped on the left side of his face. He did not retaliate but went home and reported the matter to his father who then informed police.

Lawmen responded and went to the Walmer Lodge area where Richardson was spotted and interviewed. He admitted to committing the act and was arrested.

Asked by the magistrate Thursday whether he had anything to say for his behaviour, Richardson said he had “nothing” to say.

However, when questioned by the magistrate, Richardson revealed that he had been kicked out of school for “just giving trouble [but] nothing like this, just like skipping classes” and did not know what he wanted to do with his life.

“This is foolishness,” the magistrate said, adding that something “had to be wrong” with Richardson as this was “not normal behaviour.”

He asked the teenager whether he smoked “dope”, but Richardson said he did not.

After speaking with the teenager and his mother, the magistrate ordered the community service.

If Richardson “does it well” then no conviction will be recorded against him.

He was also placed on $750 bail, which he secured with one surety and will return to court on July 28 for a progress report.

  • That's right, he violated the 5th amendment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. No Torture-No one has the right to hurt or torture another person.

  • He is a bully- plain and simple. Weak and un-formed. And bullies know who to target until they meet the right one.
Stop covering these bullies with lame excuses and rationalizing their anti-social behavior.
A lot of people don't have fathers, mothers, others or opportunities in life and they don't commit crime. It is a choice.
He should have been made to apologize publicly to that little boy. He was the victim and he deserved that sense of justice.

  • Well mannered young child. This is expected and it is not a rarity. To Kellman I tip my hat to you and to his father who handled the situation appropriately.

His community service should be public, demeaning and a deterent. So he slaps your son and you will go kill him or assault him Ras-cal?

Consequential thinking is not always expected by our young sons and daughters but for a grown man to go take the law in his own hands and assault another teenager in public, police note pad full of witnesses and with emotions running high the possibility exists of him being seriously hurt. ABH, GBH or ATM? SMH! Been following your replies and almost every reply that comes from your corner carries a ficticious persona of being a bad man or being nonchalant. Yawn! A so the word Ras is now associated?

We as fathers need to rationalise and not contribute to father absence as this in effect carries its own psychological, emotional, economical etc on the youth.

He's just a little bully and hopefully the experience of being arrested, threat of a probable conviction followed by the judiciary process is deterrent enough.
