Barbadian entrepreneur Dale Trotman has launched an innovative app that he believes can revolutionize health records management, not only in Barbados but across the Caribbean.

Speaking during the official launch of MedRegis EHR last Friday, he said he had been working over the past five years to ensure the app, which will enable medical professionals to move from paper-based records to an electronic records management system, was of a high standard.

“My aim with MedRegis is not about becoming a billionaire [but rather] to create an application that becomes the pioneering start-up in health technology in the Caribbean,” said Trotman, who has won the Social Innovation Award at TIC Americas and has been to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Silicon Valley in the United States.

“Our aim is to eradicate the widespread use of paper within ambulatory care in the Caribbean. Doctors, nurses and front desk staff want to integrate technology into their professional lives, the same way it is integrated into their personal lives. MedRegis will achieve this, by stream lining workflow and usability, in a way paper cannot.”

He said waiting long hours in a doctor’s office and experiencing difficulty understanding doctors’ handwriting could be a thing of the past, once MedRegis is utilized.

“This solution will fast-track the appointment process, allowing doctors to deliver prescriptions electronically and to also do their billing processes in this manner . . . . The MedRegis application will also provide medical staff with a more efficient way of storing patients’ health records, including X-ray images,” he explained.

Minister of Culture Sports and Youth Steven Lashley also spoke at the launch which was held at his office, lauding Trotman for his innovation.

Although acknowledging that bringing new products to the market was a challenging process, he said: “We need, however, to have more young entrepreneurs like Dale coming to the fore with their skills and products and services that will re-energize the Barbados economy . . . . Some of the current economy challenges we are facing is as a result of the absence of more young entrepreneurs who have their base here in Barbados and who see the world as their market.”

Lashley added that Government would continue to play its part as well.

“We pledge our continued commitment to effectively enhancing the lives of young people and to continuously improving the delivery of our services, so that young entrepreneurs receive timely responses to their critical business development needs,” he said.
