Jakeem Forde and Tremaine Dowrich guided Barbados to a four-wicket victory in a close and exciting match against the Windward Islands in their first round encounter of the Cricket West Indies Under 15 Tournament at Weymouth Sports Club Ground Wednesday afternoon.
Chasing a target of 104 for victory, Barbados were in deep trouble at 25 for six wickets in the 13th over when Forde, a student of Foundation School and Dowrich who attends the St Leonard Boys School, stopped the rot and steered Barbados to victory.
Barbados eventually scored 104 for the lost of six wickets in 38. 5 overs to win the game before excited fans who gathered at the Roebuck Street ground.
The tall Forde scored 30 not out and the pint-sized Dowrich, a cousin of West Indies wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, complied an unbeaten 25. They shared a seventh wicket partnership of 79 runs to rescue the home team from their dangerous position.
Forde batting at number eight faced 90 balls and struck two fours during his 104-minute vigil at the crease. Dowrich batted for 113 minutes and struck a single boundary.
The Barbadian fans at the ground looked on in shock as left-arm fast bowler Tyran Theodore and his right-handed counterparts Jedd Joseph and Tiron Charles ripped through the home team’s top order.
After the initial burst by the Windward Islands’ fast bowlers, the visitors’ attack seemed to lose its sting, and Forde and Dowrich batted carefully and saw their team over the victory line.
Theodore nabbed 2 for 12 while Joseph had similar figures from his four overs. Charles bowled an impressive spell of six overs for 13 runs with one wicket.
Earlier the Windward Islands won the toss and elected to bat. They were dismissed for 103 after being reduced to 47 for the loss of six wickets and in danger of being dismissed for fewer than 100 runs.
Joseph who compiled a patient 20 from 96 balls in 102 minutes and captain Keygan Arnold 16, shared a six-wicket partnership of 43 to guide them past the 100 mark. Ackeem Auguste made 14.
Fast bowling all-rounder Forde, who had a good match with the bat and ball, and fast bowler Che Simmons, took early wickets to leave the Windward Islands struggling at 29 for 3.
Off-spinner Thierry Walcott and left arm spinner and captain Renacko Belgrave stalled the Windwards’ batsmen with only four boundaries struck in their innings.
Jacob Bethell also created problems for the batsmen with his left-arm spin and medium pacer Jordan Knight also kept the pressure on the visitors.
Bethell who is normally behind the stumps took two wickets for just 12 runs from 10 overs that included three maidens. Forde took two wickets for 12 runs from four overs and Knight chipped in with two wickets for nine runs from five overs.
