The usually serene environs of the historic Farley Hill National Park were transformed into a kaleidoscope of flags, banners, picnic baskets and blankets last Sunday as thousands of soca lovers packed the picturesque grounds for the highly anticipated Soca On De Hill event.
It was a soca lovers dream. Besides the top soca artistes who performed, there were drinking buddies, and the usually good vibe. Many artistes appeared rushed in their performances in an effort to save time, but the soca lovers, who were in moods quite befitting the location, did not seem to mind.
Perhaps the one downside to this year’s show was that it suffered an anti-climactic end. Not as a result of violence or anything of the sort, but because following the final performer’s set, the crowd wanted more and had to be reminded by MC’s Vain and Daddy Fabian that the event was over.
Other than that, the event received a passing grade. In fact, top marks that allowed it to remain on the top of the “not to be missed” events for Crop Over season.
Headliners Patrice Roberts, Skinny Fabulous and The Ultimate Rejects showed why they are among the best in the business. Barbadians love Patrice, there’s not doubt about it. And she loves them right back. The Trini songstress shared a very special moment with her fans by bringing her daughter Liliana Roberts on stage during her performance for fans to see.
Patrice told the media after her performance she felt the need to introduce her daughter since the last time Bajans saw her on stage , she was pregnant with her. It was indeed a special moment for Patrice and her adoring fans.
Her set was thoroughly enjoyable. She sang her ever popular hit Big Girl Now and others hits including, Old and Grey, Sugar Boy, A Little Wine, Always Be, among many others.
Patrice is definitely a joy to see on stage always.
Skinny was his usual hyped self, giving fans hits like Plenty, Thank God It’s Friday, Watch Thing, Lights Go Down, Behaving The Worst and much more.
Ultimate Rejects and their hit song Full Extreme totally demolished the hill; the soca lovers couldn’t get enough. Also performing were Ricky T and Orlando Octave who were both well received.
There was also a full contingent of top Bajan soca artistes including Leadpipe and Saddis, Red Plastic Bag, Nikita, Joaquin, Sanctuary, Fadda Fox, Hypasounds, Stiffy, Marzville, Scrilla, Shaquille, Marvay and many others. They performed some of the season’s biggest hits and older hits as well.
All in all, a good time was had by all at this year’s Soca On De Hill with many already looking forward to next year’s event.
