Brothers Martin and Dan Raizman-owned Infrared headlines a field of nine for the T A ”Tommy” Peirce Memorial Trophy going 1570 meters for the top rated horses on Massy United Insurance Derby day Tuesday.
This race will be the second supported feature on the day and looks like the best T A ”Tommy” Peirce Memorial line up to date. Eight out of nine animals in the field have placed in the top four in their last starts with the Gay Smith-owned Gayzing placing fifth in his last effort, setting up a must-see race.
Infrared’s quest for triple wins came on May 27 in the Leave It To Me Handicap going the longer trip of 1800 meters and carrying the light weight of 114 pounds. He destroyed his three other opponents by eight lengths. The USA-imported Son Of Discreetly Mine then returned on June 24 in the Areutalkintome Trophy going Tuesday’s distance of 1570 meters, took the top weight of 128 pounds this time and won from Janak’s Gold by a neck in a time of 1 minute 35.2 seconds with Janak’s Gold taking 113 pounds on that occasion.
Infrared will come out of gate number 1 and have Rasheed Hughes in the saddle taking the joint second weight of 123 pounds.
Archrival to Infrared, the creole Janak’s Gold, has placed second to Infrared in his last two outings. His connections are confident the chestnut gelding will turn the tables once again. Janak’s Gold’s last win came on April 17 in the Street Vendor Handicap going 1570 meters getting home by a neck from Infrared in a time of 1 minute 36.4 seconds taking 107 pounds.
The Jonathan Simpson-trained animal came back to make it two wins in a row on May 27 in the Leave It To Me Handicap going the longer trip of 1800 meters but went down to his main rival by eight lengths into second position. Janak’s Gold will have young Jarrelle Beckles in the saddle with 118 pounds.
Horse number 3 Apparition, just like Infrared, will be going after a hat-trick of wins. The six-year-old mare who has not run out of the first four since May 16, 2016, has her hardest test to date. A winner last race day July 15, she defeated the best sprinters in the land in the Season Of Emancipation Handicap going 1100 meters, taking 113 pounds sprinting home from this year’s Spa Sprint winner Wild Cat Tea and Daunting David respectively.
The Stephen Jardine-owned honest mare last won going the 1570 metre trip on February 11 in the Grandstand Posse Players Association Handicap. Trainer of Apparition, Boston John, will also be going after a personal hat-trick as he has won the last two runnings of the T A ”Tommy” Peirce Memorial Trophy with Shared Adventure 2015 and Lucky Adventure 2016 respectively. Antonio Perch will get the call once again on Apparition and will take 113 pounds, the exact weight she carried last race day.
Sandy Lane Gold Cup winner Dorsett will still be looking to shake off the jinx of not winning another race other than the Sandy Lane Gold Cup since he came to Barbados last year. Dorsett will take the joint top weight of 128 pounds and will have apprentice rider Delano Lopez in the saddle. In the T A ”Tommy” Peirce Memorial trophy there will be a no apprentice allowance rule. Just A Fashion, Indiano Jones, Nekitta, Daunting David, and Gayzing round off the nine-horse field. Post time for the T A ”Tommy” Peirce Memorial trophy will be 3.05 p.m. and is race six on the card.
Trainers Edward Walcott, Victor Cheeseman, Jonathan Simpson and Robert Peirce who have runners in both the T A ”Tommy” Peirce and Massy United Derby will be going after a record of winning both races on the same day.
There have been some late changes to the Derby. Horse number 13 Justice League has been a late withdrawal and reserve horse Carbon Copy gets in. Top Gulf Stream Park Jockey Tyler Gaffalione will no longer be making the trip to ride Trinidad entry Nisky’s Boy but third placed jockey in the Gulf Stream Park standings Miguel Vasquez will be aboard.
Post time for the first race will be 12 30 p.m. with the Massy United Derby running off at 4 50 p.m. There will be nine races on the card.
