The Miss Senior Sweetheart pageant came off last Saturday but various organizational glitches made the event an obvious disappointment for the audience which scarcely packed the venue at the Barbados Hilton.
To begin with, the event started late as persons listened to the biographies of the panel of judges which included Kadooment Band Leader Of The Year 2017 Kevin Small and chief judge, organizer of the Miss Big and Beautiful pageant, Tonia Husbands.
Then there was only one person entered in the Crop Over section. The entertainment that followed next could be described as a version of karaoke as many of the contestants carried their own keys and appeared to be out of tune and pitchy.
One contestant left members of the audience speechless as she attempted to render the song This Place by Joaquin Brewster. She was out of breath and pitchy throughout most of her attempt.
The spectacle left one wondering whether persons who performed in the special category as well as entertainment, were reviewed prior to them going on stage.
The stand out performance of the night was the eventual winner Wendy Newton who did a dramatic interpretation of Don’t Cry for me Joanie. Half of her face and attire was that of a female while the other half was in male attire where she answered Joanie’s calls and messages.
On a positive note, all the contestants were beautifully attired in the formal section with many wearing elegant ball gowns which were simply stunning.
The proceeds of the event went to three local charities: The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSCPA), Fishers of Men and St Catherine’s House of Hope.
It is hoped that with the competition now in its sixth year, there would be improvements going forward so that patrons can truly have value for their money in all aspects.
