Two men were slapped with stiff fines after pleading guilty to several drug related offences today.
Thirty-one-year-old Tito Mardonna O’Neil Barrow of Block 1G Bottom Close, Wildey, St Michael and 51-year-old Winfield St. Auban Lowe, a New York-based Barbadian, appeared in the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ court on charges including unlawful possession of cannabis; possession with intent to supply; trafficking and importation of cannabis.
Barrow and Lowe arrived in the island from New York on Monday. After clearing immigration, customs officers searched their luggage and discovered the illegal drugs.
Thirty-eight vacuum-sealed packages of cannabis weighing just over 26 pounds with a street value of BDS$106, 000 were found in two suitcases carried by Barrow.
While Lowe had two brown taped packages and five transparent vacuum sealed packages of cannabis weighing just over 25 pounds with an estimated street value of BDS $103, 000.
During today’s court hearing both men pleaded guilty to the offences.
Chief Magistrate Christopher Birch fined Barrow and Lowe BDS$15, 000 each to be paid in nine months. Failure to do so will result in two years in prison for the offence of unlawful possession of cannabis.
They were also fined a further BDS$15, 000 to be paid in nine months or they will spend two years in prison for the offence of importation of cannabis.
They were convicted, reprimanded and discharged for the offence of possession with intent to supply, and reprimanded and discharged for the offence of trafficking of cannabis.
