With just over two days to go before Christmas, a family of eight has been left homeless after fire destroyed their Hope Land, St Philip home this afternoon.
Police Public Relations Officer Acting Inspector Roland Cobbler told Barbados TODAY that the blaze, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., gutted the four-bedroom wooden home belonging to Malacia Job.
No one was at home at the time, but according to reports, neighbours noticed smoke coming from the house, prompting them to call the Barbados Fire Service.
Two fire tenders and eight officers, led by Acting Chief Fire Officer Ricardo Gittens, responded to the fire, which also slightly damaged Odette Lucas’ wooden home.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
However, Cobbler urged Barbadians to be careful about how they go about setting up Christmas lights and other electrical equipment this holiday season.
“I would like to urge persons to be very careful this season. In the rush of trying to put everything together people sometimes forget to safeguard a lot of things and they sometimes do things like overload sockets. I am not saying this happened in this case, but we want everyone to be safe and enjoy the holidays to fullest and let’s keep these unfortunate incidents to a minimum,” Cobbler said.
