For the first time, a female student has copped the Glyne Barker Memorial Scholarship.
Sydnee-Faith Cyrus, a Barbados Community College (BCC) student who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, recently won the two-year scholarship offered by the Lions Club of Barbados South.
It was proud moment for the soft-spoken, ambitious student, who warmly received the award.
“I feel honoured and blessed to receive this scholarship. It will help with my student loans and so on,” Cyrus said.
The scholarship was established in the memory of Glyne Barker who was a member of the Institute for Chartered Engineers, a student of the BCC and a longstanding member of the Lions Club of Barbados.
Chairman of the Youth and Education Committee of the Lions Club Haldene Dottin told Barbados TODAY the scholarship was geared towards students pursuing studies in building and civil engineering with healthy grade point averages and exemplary conduct.
BCC Registrar Roger Worrell said though the tertiary institution was always grateful to receive assistance for its students, this year’s award was particularly moving.
“We are happy to have the first female recipient of the scholarship and, in addition to that, it is going to the Division of Technology. That is one of the only divisions where you have a small number of females. We are glad to see female students pursuing technology.
“We want to see more persons pursuing STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] areas in education. I am happy to see that a young lady, who is doing extremely well, can take advantage of this opportunity to further her studies at BCC,” he said.
