The St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Primary School today benefited from a generous donation of $20, 000 from the Eldorado Gold Mining Company, with principal Pauline Dempsey welcoming the financial support which she said would go a long way in supporting her school’s reading and general learning objectives.
Noting that children learn at different rates, Dempsey said her school was focused on ensuring that its students were given the best chance to go on to high school.
“What is the point of education if children are not equipped with the ability to break down words they are unsure of and read them?” she asked, while warning that, “one size does not fit all!”
The funds are to be used to acquire new books for the school’s library. The school is also looking to hire a teacher for its remedial learning programme.
President and Managing Director of the Eldorado Gold Mining Company Robert Bourque said they were pleased to contribute to the worthwhile venture after receiving a proposal from the principal.
“It is our belief that improved skills in reading are fundamental to learning thereby allowing young students to progress further in their studies and to reach their potential and hopefully their goals in life, “ he said.
