A 20-year-old man, who allegedly stole several items from a bar, including the cash register, has been remanded to Dodds for the next 28 days.
Selwyn Richard Maurice Maynard, of no fixed place of abode, is accused of entering Niki’s Hide Out and Bar as a trespasser sometime between January 31 and February 1 and stealing 44 bottles of alcohol, four bottles of wine, nine cases of beer, six cases of soft drinks, 24 bottles of energy drinks, a television, a bag, a cable and a cash register totaling $4,221 belonging to Jared Layne.
However, when he appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick he denied the theft offence, while admitting to having a small quantity of cannabis in his possession when he was taken into police custody.
“I did have the spliff,” Maynard told the magistrate.
However, the prosecutor, Station Sergeant Neville Reid, objected to bail based on the seriousness of the charge against Maynard, the need to protect society and the fact that he has no fixed place of abode.
“I live with my mother in Brittons Hill,” Maynard said, but given the two different versions of his living arrangements from his parents, he was remanded until March 8.
