They say the last shall be first and so it came to pass when Alleyne ‘Blue’ House Bolts scored 1074 points to emerge as champions of the 2018 Alleyne School Inter-house sports held today at the National Stadium.
The battle for supremacy was between Alleyne House who came fourth in 2017 and last year’s track kings Haynes ‘Red’ House Hawks finishing second this time around on 965 points, while Read ‘Yellow’ House tallied 847 points for third. Cumberbatch ‘Green’ House Rottweiler were not that far behind on 836 points for fourth position.
Three records were broken and reigning victrix ludorum of the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championship (BSSAC), Brieanna Boyce broke two of them in the 400m and 200m and also won the 100m.
The 13-year-old Boyce took her mark in the 400m under wet conditions and sprinted the one lap perimeter in record time of 1:01.33 and dismissed the long-standing 20-year-old record of 1:01.73 set by former head girl and outstanding athlete Peta Smith in 1998.
What made the accomplishment even more fulfilling was that Smith was present this morning to see Boyce break the record and after the race went over and embraced the young lady.
Boyce then treated the stadium to another record-breaking performance with a 26.10 seconds performance in the 200m, which was good enough to erase the 2015 time of 26.47 seconds belonging to Shemia Odaine also of Haynes House.
The closest to Boyce in the 200m were the pair from Cumberbatch House Tia Spellen in 27.10 seconds and Zipporah Haynes 27.92 for third. Meanwhile in the 100m Boyce ran 13.14 to end the day undefeated.
Haynes House also captured the third record of the day, this time in the Under-15 Boys 4x100m. The previous time was 50.22 seconds and the young men ran 48.01 seconds to shatter their own record set in 2015.
In what could possibly be her final year at the school, Odaine dominated the Under-20 Girls Division for 79 points for victrix ludorum honours. A member of Rising Stars track club, Odaine clocked 1:00.47 in the 400m.
In the 200m it was Odaine against the clock yet again as there was no one to match her strides and in the end she passed the photo finish in 25.16 seconds. She literally destroyed the 100m field in 12.48 seconds as well with the closest being Kadesha Williams of Read House.
In addition to those three races, she also won the 800m, 1500m and long jump but settled for second in the shot put, third in the javelin and fourth in the discus.
The victor ludorum was Aydan Auguste of the victorious Alleyne House in the Under-15 Boys category. Auguste totalled 63 points having stood out with wins in the 100m, 200m, 400m 800m and javelin. He was third in the discus and fourth in the shot put.
Alleyne House really commanded proceedings from start to finish with three division champions among the Boys. Ranaco Browne with 42 points topped the Under-13 Boys, Necoli Payne starred with 43 points in the Under-17 and Leandre Walker totalled 56 points in the Under-20 Males. Allicia Miller was the only Under-15 Girl from Alleyne House to win a division title scoring 63 points.
Davia Stuart of Haynes House collected 39 points for bragging rights in the Under-13 Girls. Cumberbatch House pair of Carris Boyce in Under-15 A had 43 points and Leslieanne Gaskin 44 for the Under-17 Division honours.
