Sports fans will on Saturday have the opportunity to witness the most highly anticipated event on Barbados’ horseracing calendar, the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup.
Celebrating 37 years, the Gold Cup race carries one of the highest purses of any horserace in the Caribbean of BBD $214,000.
At the historic Garrison Savannah, eight horses will compete against last year’s winner, Dorsette, who will be running out of gate eight and representing St Michael. This year’s race features international entrants from the USA and Trinidad & Tobago who also have their eyes on the gold.
Top U.S. owner Ken Ramsey returns to Barbados in search of a third victory in the Caribbean’s most prestigious race.
Represented by Grade two winner Shining Copper and Queen’s Plate victor Sir Dudley Digges, the Ramsey colour-bearers will square off against two-time defending Gold Cup winner Dorsett, trained by Barbadian Robert Pierce. Local racing fans are eager to see if local contender Dorsette will be able to pull a hat trick and retain his crown.
Post time for the first race is slated for 12 p.m. Each of the 11 races is named after a feature of the Sandy Lane resort from the award winning Spa to the signature L’Acajou fine dining restaurant. In their 22 years as title sponsor, Sandy Lane Hotel has donated a grand total of BBD $4.8 million in prize money since 1996.
As is customary, the feature race will be preceded by the famed pomp and pageantry of the spectacular opening parade which has a 3:30 p.m. start time. However, this year’s parade will see some new additions including a set by local legend RPB and young star Trinity Clarke, culminating in what has become the unofficial Gold Cup anthem, ‘Beautiful Barbados’.
International coverage will be provided by The Horse Racing Radio Network (HRRN) located in Kentucky USA, beaming a live stream to over 300 million horse racing fans throughout the world beginning at 3 p.m. on www.horseracingradio.net. HRRN’s Mike Penna and Jude Feld will be joined by NBC and New York’s Racing Association’s (NYRA) announcer Larry Collmus live from the Historic Garrison Savannah.]]>
