What started out as a routine ride for a St Philip man and his girlfriend this morning has ended in tragedy.
Police say 49-year-old Francis Henderson Lorde, of Seaview Park, Long Bay, St Philip, was the lone passenger in the vehicle driven by his girlfriend 56-year-old Valdene Burton of Hannays Valley, Christ Church when he met his untimely death around 7:55 a.m.
Their Toyota vehicle collided along Brereton Road, St Philip with an Isuzu truck driven by 49-year-old Ken Williams, of Four Roads, St Philip, with Lorde succumbing to his injuries at the scene.
However, Burton, who complained of pain to her back, left side and neck, was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical attention and was said to be in stable condition.
Though he escaped serious injury, Williams was left visibly shaken by the accident, in which fire service officers were forced to use the Jaws of Life to remove Burton and Lorde from their motorcar.
When Barbados TODAY visited Lorde’s St Philip home this evening family members were still too distraught to speak about his death, which brings to the five the number of road fatalities this year.
The accident, which remains under police investigation, has been met with renewed calls for motorists to exercise greater caution on the island’s roads, where 28 persons in total were killed last year in 25 accidents, up from ten road deaths the previous year.
