The top three-year-olds from the Bajan Blue Restaurant Trophy on Sandy Lane Gold Cup day, are back to contest an excellent field of eight runners for the 2018 Grandstand Posse Classic Trial tomorrow going 1570 meters and carrying a purse of $30, 000.
The Boston John-trained unbeaten colt so far for 2018 Jericho, Robert Peirce’s Taco Man and Richard Dean’s Peruvian had ran first, second and third respectively on Gold Cup day and look like the key runners come Easter Monday.
Top three-year old Jericho a winner of his last three starts from four career starts, broke his maiden in his second start on January 6 this year when he won by a whopping 11 and 1\4 lengths in the Blue Sails allotted weights race going 1100 meters. He then came back and won the Michael Parravicino Memorial going 1570 meters on February 3 defeating the talented runners Gandalf and Stealin who placed second and third but are not entered tomorrow. Jericho will take 124 pounds as all the colts in the field.
Taco Man is improving rapidly. He finished fourth in the Michael Parravicino then came back to finish second on Gold Cup day. The bay colt by Alma D Oro had won for the first time defeating a three-year-old maiden field in the Excelebration Handicap on January 22 that included Gandalf who placed fourth.
Top Barbadian jockey Patrick Husbands will be aboard Taco Man for the first time.
The Aysha Syndicate’s Peruvian last won when scoring in the Barbados Coat of Arms on November 11, defeating imported horses Sharjah and Inspired Adventure going the sprint trip of 1100 meters. Peruvian had placed seventh on Boxing Day in the Nursery Stakes before coming back to run a very good third behind Jericho and Taco man on Gold Cup day.
Horse number 2 Lollipop, the only ride in the field to have defeated the mighty Jericho, will be looking to break down his walls again. Lollipop, the only filly entered on Monday, won her first start showing tremendous speed on December 9 in the Santa Claus Handicap going 1100 meters and defeating Majestic Star, Taco man and Jericho in that order. The Jamaican bred filly came back to finish third in the Boxing Day Nursery Stakes before finishing second to Majestic Star last race day.
Majestic Star who had placed last of nine runners in the Bajan Blue Restaurant Trophy, My Friend Patch and Quality Star who finished seventh and eighth in the Micheal Parravicino round off the field.
Post time for Monday’s first race is 1.15 p.m. while the feature race The Grandstand Posse Classic Trial will run off at 4.20 p.m. and is race 7 on the nine-race card. (KL)
