Brittons Hill came from a goal down to drub Abrahams’ United Silver Sands 3-1 in the Barbados Football Association’s Premier League last night at the Wildey, St Michael AstroTurf.
Coming into the matchup, Silver Sands, currently in sixth position at the bottom of zone one standings on three points, badly needed a win. But just when things seemed promising for them early in the first half with a 1-0 advantage, they wilted under pressure and allowed Brittons Hill to come from behind and score three goals in the second half and condemn them to their third loss of the season.
On a night when the rain poured, numerous chances went a-begging as Brittons Hill missed several goal-scoring opportunities that should have been put into the back of the nets. Similarly, Silver Sands had Brittons Hill’s backline led by captain Rohan Hall and the experienced Omar Archer defending for all they were worth.
But a rare chance to score came about and the men from Christ Church grasped the opportunity in the 26th minute when the diminutive Derrine Gale-Forde took off down the right flank with a burst of speed, passed one defender before passing off the ball inside the six-yard box to fellow striker Donte McClean who got there just in time to hammer it home.
Brittons Hill missed a perfect opportunity to equalize on the stroke of half-time when Romario Kaka Small curled a 20-yard free kick beautifully but sent it into the awaiting gloves of Silver Sands custodian Jamal Moore.
But it didn’t take long in the second half for Brittons Hill to score compliments Guyanese national Denzil Fordyce. He outran two defenders before sprinting towards the 18-yard box and nailing the equalizer with his right foot past Silver Sands goalkeeper Moore.
Minutes later and Brittons Hill should have taken the lead when free-kick specialist Small delivered one of his lovely on-target shots that found the forehead of Norrin Corbin, but the ball went just wide of the goal bars to the disappointment of Brittons Hill supporters who belted out groans of disappointment.
However, that 2-1 lead eventually came about when Brittons Hill’s central defender Rohan Hall crossed to Jahshaun Moore who put on the finishing touch in the 64th minute. Six minutes later in the 70th minute and Travis Coppin netted Brittons Hill’s third goal of the match to comfortably capture three points and BDS $500 for the win.
Coppin counted himself lucky when Silver Sands defender tried to clear the ball and sent it in the wrong direction towards the goal bars where the lanky Coppin was situated and easily buried it past Moore who was left scrambling yet again.
As it stands in zone one, Brittons Hill in fourth position are now on six points tied with Paradise and Clayton’s Kola Tonic Notre Dame while defending champions Weymouth Wales are out front with 12 points. Last night’s defeat was the third for Silvers Sands who have so far played four games and remain in relegation hot water along with Empire.
Currently in second position in zone two are Crane and Equipment Ellerton Football Club and they also featured last night where they trounced Rendezvous 4-0 thanks to a brace from Shaquan Clarke in the 82nd and 86th minute respectively. The other two goal scorers came from Zinio Harris and Shaquan Collymore in the 26th and 91st minute respectively.
Ellerton moved on to seven points just two points behind former three-time kings Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme on nine.
