The Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) has elected Sean Spencer as its new president.
Spencer, a teacher at The Foundation School, polled 174 votes to unseat Pedro Shepherd who had been at the helm of the umbrella teachers’ union for the past six years.
Shepherd mustered 154 votes during yesterday’s election, while his other challenger, Everton Briggs, secured 126 votes.
On his social media page, the new president thanked those who voted and supported him with “their actions and prayers.
“I am excited for what lies ahead.”
In other results, Herbert Gittens was re-elected unopposed as general secretary and his deputy Rudy Lovell also retained his post.
Candacy Griffith was voted treasurer, replacing Andre Knight, while Julian Pierre retained the position of public relations officer.
Six additional executive [floor] members were elected to serve in the new administration for 2018-2019. (EJ)
