BUT elects Spencer as new president

The Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) has elected Sean Spencer as its new president.

Spencer, a teacher at The Foundation School, polled 174 votes to unseat Pedro Shepherd who had been at the helm of the umbrella teachers’ union for the past six years.

Shepherd mustered 154 votes during yesterday’s election, while his other challenger, Everton Briggs, secured 126 votes.

On his social media page, the new president thanked those who voted and supported him with “their actions and prayers.

“I am excited for what lies ahead.”

In other results, Herbert Gittens was re-elected unopposed as general secretary and his deputy Rudy Lovell also retained his post.

Candacy Griffith was voted treasurer, replacing Andre Knight, while Julian Pierre retained the position of public relations officer.

Six additional executive [floor] members were elected to serve in the new administration for 2018-2019. (EJ)

  • RoverP; you are correct but CCC and Archy Perch are hoping for another DLP operative to be the Union leader, would it make sense dumping one and replacing with the same? DLP time is up also, yardies.

  • Carson why should a president of a union support a party? I believe that leader should have one objective and that is to fight for union members and not be used as a poppet by any party like some were used by the DLP.

  • He will need a magnifying glass to find a spot on that BIG ASS of hers to kiss. The other union leaders having a feast already. Even the parasites in the employer's grouping having pleasure.

  • Sad, our only concern about a new president, is which party he supports. Now if it is the BLP or Dlp, what difference does it really make.

  • Pedro 126 votes while Briggs' VOTES was 154. Those scores were incorrectly REPORTED.
Candace Shepherd did not replace Andre Knight. Both were First timers vying for the position of treasurer.
Ms. Griffith replaced Anderson butcher who did not run for a third term.
