Senator David Durant says the church, school and community all have a significant role to play in curbing the worrying surge of domestic violence in Barbados.
His comments came five days after the killing of 36-year-old Onika King who was fatally stabbed in her shop at No.41, Mandela Plaza, Swan Street, The City.
Durant says training for young men to respect and honour females should begin from within their home environment.
“I think that it is very crucial and that it must begin from the home. Young boys should be taught to respect their mothers and sisters, the females around them and don’t just look at them as a weaker vessel but look at them as potential mothers in this nation that we are depending upon to help build or nation,” Durant said.
“Teaching our young men to respect their mothers, their sisters, their wives, fiancé or girlfriend is very, very critical.”
Durant, who is the founder and senior pastor at Restoration Ministries, was speaking Friday at the newly opened Hephzibah Nursery and Preschool.
“No man has a right to brutalize a woman. I have no tolerance for a man hitting a woman. I have been married for 38 years and I have never ever raised my hand to hit my wife. I have never even thought of it,” he said.
“I have a low tolerance level for men who brutalize women. Men who raise their hand or men who abuse women. I have a very low tolerance level for that because the women are the generation that will help to raise our children, will help to educate our children.”
Durant also said that many women in our society are single mothers due to men neglecting them prior to the baby being born.
He also says the school has a role to play in educating young men as well as young girls to respect themselves and each other to strike a balance between the sexes.
“We do not just want to bash the men, just bash the boys; I think we need a balance all around. So, schools can do a very important part as well as the church and the community, those three entities,’ Durant said, adding that the media can also help to educate people to respect and love each other.
Durant says the church has a valuable role to play as they can bring a sense of hope amidst the chaos that is happening in society. (LG)
