A 49-year-old man, who stole a bottle of Histal because “the cold has been messing” with him, will spend the next eight months in prison.
Anthony Ricardo Pryme, of no fixed place of abode, pleaded guilty to stealing the $11.65 item from Popular Discount on Spry Street, The City, on Saturday.
According to Sergeant Cameron Gibbons, the accused entered the supermarket around 9:43 a.m. and was observed taking the item from the display.
Pryme was later stopped and searched by a security officer as he exited the store only to find that the bottle, which he threw on the ground, was already empty.
“I have not been charged for theft for the past four years,” Pryme pointed out for the benefit of Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant today, even while admitting that he had been “struggling with dope and cocaine”.
“It’s been ruining my life,” he said of the illegal drug.
As for the cough medication, Pryme admitted to stealing it because “my nose was running”.
He also said he had made a promise to himself that “if I walked out of here today I would go the Psychiatric Hospital for help.
“I am sorry, I did it but this cold has been messing with me,” Pryme added, before suggesting to the magistrate that she could drive him to the Black Rock, St Michael facility, so he could get the necessary help.
Instead, he earned himself a ride in the prison bus to the St Philip penal institution where he has been ordered to enroll in the drug rehabilitation programme.
