The Saint Lucia Jazz Festival 2018 kicks off on May 7 with A World of Jazz at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa and Beach Resort and climaxes with a Mother’s Day Special at the Pigeon Point National Landmark on Sunday, May 13.
Over seven days and nights, patrons will take a musical journey with thrilling Jazz performances featuring rhythmic influences from Africa, Europe, America and the Caribbean.
The musical journey opens on Monday, May 7th with a Cross Over jazz performance from Barbara Cadet, an accomplished Saint Lucian musician, vocalist, arranger and composer, who will be followed by Denys Baptiste, a British saxophonist with Saint Lucian heritage known for his colossal talent and powerful technique. Tuesday, May 8th features Haitian- American vocalist Pauline Jean and Guadeloupean Arnaud Dolmen’s eclectic quartet providing an erudite blend of worldly jazz.
On Wednesday, May 9, featured performers include songstress Zara McFarlane and Etienne Mbappé and the Prophets. With their unusual trumpet/tenor/violin frontline leading the way, the Prophets explore eleven Mbappé originals, which touch on a number of international traditions while bridging cultural divides. Zara Mc Farlane is described as the UK’s foremost Black British Jazz vocalist with music that reflects his British-Jamaican identity.
Dominican Cameron Pierre and Saint Lucian Luther Francois perform on Thursday, May 10th. Arranger/composer Luther Francois is one of the most widely known and respected musicians and educators in the Caribbean and will present his newest project Fragments. Also featured on Thursday evening will be guitarist Cameron Pierre, with a dexterous sound strongly influenced by his early affinity to calypso and reggae music.
A World of Jazz ends on Friday, May 11th with Grammy® nominated artist, songwriter Carolyn Malachi, known for her breathtaking live performances and AZIZA, a group described as a musical powerhouse and features guitarist Lionel Loueke, saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Dave Holland and drummer, Eric Harland.
Also on offer this year, intimate Saint Lucia Jazz dinner sets at the Harbor Club and the Royalton Saint Lucia Resort & Spa.
Dine and enjoy the staccato rhythms and powerful vocals of critically acclaimed Jazzmeia Horn in A Taste of Bourbon Street, as she performs jazz of the classic brand infused with modern flavours of gospel and neo-soul at the Harbor Club on May 10 and 11 only.
The soulful sounds of Lalah Hathaway and the eclectic melodies of Alfredo Rodriguez present a riveting musical experience at the Royalton Saint Lucia Resort & Spa on May 11 and 12, in A Musical Tapestry.

The daughter of legendary American jazz singer, Donny Hathaway, her exceptional vocal talent and soulful music have made her one of the decade’s most sought-after Jazz performers.
Known for his crisp bebop lines, melodic and thick harmonic clusters, acclaimed Cuban pianist, composer, and arranger Alfredo Rodriguez will showcase his talents on Saturday, May 12. Rodriguez is a globally recognized Grammy®-nominee with three critically acclaimed releases on tastemaker imprint Mack Avenue Records: Sounds of Space (2011), The Invasion Parade (2014), and Tocororo (2016).
The Saint Lucia Jazz Festival Mother’s Day Special at Pigeon Island National Landmark on Sunday, May 13 brings the Festival to a close.
Some of the world’s greatest performers will take the stage – from Martinique, jazz pianist, composer, producer and singer Frantz Laurac and his quartet, also performing Saint Lucian ensemble Ronald ‘Boo’ Hinkson & Friends. Boo will be accompanied by two of Saint Lucia’s youngest and most dynamic performers, 18-year-old saxophonist, Rashaad Joseph and 14-year-old pianist, Khristian Lawrence.
Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin teamed up with jazz trumpeter Christian Scott, bassist Derrick Hodge, drummer Justin Tyson and multi-instrumentalist Taylor McFerrin to form R+R=NOW (Reflect+Respond=NOW), a musical project, the name for which was inspired by the legacy of Nina Simone.
Songstress Avery Sunshine rounds up the list of powerhouse performers. Touring her latest album Twenty Sixty-Four, Avery Sunshine is best known for her #1 single Call My Name which won her the ASCAP’s Rhythm and Soul song of the year 2016 award.
