While Barbadians were celebrating Heroes Day over the weekend, the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) could find no heroes of their own to stave off a 12-0 thrashing at the hands of Combermere School Old Scholars (CSOS) as action in the Barbados Hockey Federation’s competition continued.
Playing in the weekend’s only match at the Hockey Center, Garfield Sobers Sports Complex CSOS served up 12 stern lessons for the teachers, who were also burdened by the misfortune of playing four short of a full squad. The Waterford graduates held nothing back and began the onslaught in the ninth minute when Duane Burke hammered his strike past BUT custodian Tyrese Weekes. Burke was followed in similar fashion by teammate Mark Owen in the 18th minute, before getting his second in the 21st with a cheeky reverse volley following a rebound. James Gooding rounded out the first half with back-to-back goals from team play in the 28th and 29th minutes making the halftime score 5 – 0 to CSOS.
The CSOS’ Donovan Smith opened the second half and his account in the 31st minute, with a sneaky ‘behind-the-back’ reverse touch that caught an advancing Weekes in motion. Smith bested Weekes again in the 38th minute, followed closely in the 39th by Shavon Goddard, who struck a powerful shot past Weekes from the right side. Smith featured again in the 43rd minute, with a crafty reception from an aerial pass, feigning control just in front Weekes to touch the ball into the goal off of the bounce for his third of the match. Gooding also completed his hat-trick in the 51st minute just before BUT’s player/coach Shawn Foster gave up a penalty stroke in the 53rd minute to prevent CSOS’ Anthony Trotman’s shot from crossing the goal line.
CSOS’ regular goalkeeper Clint Small, who was having a run in the field, stepped up to easily convert the penalty. Smith closed his account in 60th, after receiving a pass on the left side of the “D” and powering home with a stern strike beating Weekes across the body. Even though the scoreline did not reflect the effort, Weekes gave a commendable performance in goal, making impressive saves against CSOS’ marauding attackers.
The massive win has resulted in CSOS surging to the top of the Men’s Division 2 table, ahead of Monster All Stars by 2 goals in goal difference.
