Minister of the Environment Dr Denis Lowe today said anyone who believed he was “down and out” was in for “a big surprise”.
The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) incumbent for Christ Church East made a public appearance today – his first in several weeks – after spending more than a month at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) where he had undergone knee surgery after a nasty fall.
The secrecy surrounding Lowe’s hospitalization had sparked several rumours about his health, and whether or not he would contest the general election scheduled for May 24.
However, after joining fellow DLP candidates in paying in their deposits to the Treasury today, the still recuperating Lowe said those who write him off do so at their peril.
“Some people had it as me dying or I was in Canada. I could not travel to Canada because my passport is not even valid. So I proudly confess that services at the QEH were outstanding. The staff and the surgeon were more than competent to undertake the work that needed to be done,” he said, stressing that he would take it easy during the campaign because he had everything in place.
“I will not be hampered in any way because I intend to pace myself and that’s all I need to do. We have set up structures that will allow me to access the different areas and platforms but I don’t expect my knee to stay like this for very long. The therapy is going well, the strengthening of the knee is going well and at my age I am pretty happy. If they think that I am down and out they are in for a big surprise,” he stressed.
The incumbent was confident that even though he had not mounted a campaign platform since Parliament was dissolved on March 6, the work put in over the past five years would make it easy to catch up.
“The campaign never stops. We work in the constituency persistently from the night that the result is declared until the next time that an announcement is made for election. We have an outstanding record that cannot be challenged by anyone and therefore what we are doing now is just putting the icing on the cake. I have a very committed, able and enthusiastic team who knows a lot of the work and I am one of those people who believe that you don’t wait until election to do your work,” Lowe contended.
Lowe explained that his injuries were serious, adding that his fitness to contest the upcoming election was nothing short of a miracle.
“My recovery is going pretty well I must confess, and as a matter fact I think it is pretty miraculous that I am able to walk having gone through the procedures on my knee. The injuries resulted from a freak fall and I tore several ligaments below and above the knee cap,” he revealed.
