Joaquin Brewster is a 24-year-old soca artiste, barber and musician in the band Lejends246. The former student of St Paul’s Primary School and The Alexandra School sat with Bajan Vibes ‘La Shawna Griffith to speak about his journey as a Soca artiste.
Q: Who is Joaquin Brewster?
A: Joaquin is a young ambitious, hardworking, optimistic artiste who has plans to be one of the biggest Soca artistes from Barbados.
Q: If you had to describe yourself in three words what would they be?
A: Humble, optimistic and ambitious.
Q: What is one thing the public would not know about Joaquin?
A: I am the only person in Barbados in my generation with the name Joaquin. I love mechanics and animals.
Q: You are also a barber, what inspired you to become involved in barbery?
A: My father is a barber as well and he owns Faders Barber Shop. So you can say that I followed in his footsteps and was inspired by him.
Q: When did you realize that you wanted to pursue music as a career?
A: I decided I wanted to pursue music full-time as a career at the tender age of 14-years-old.
Q: How has your journey been as an artiste thus far?
A: It has been awesome and I thank God everyday. I count my blessings daily.
Q: How did the band Lejends246 come about?
A: A group of young guys with their love for music came together.
Q: Would you say that becoming the protégé to the veteran Krosfyah has helped you develop further towards your goal to be the best Soca Artiste out of Barbados?
A: My experience with Krosfyah has been great! To learn from one of my idols and tour several Caribbean islands has been awesome! I am truly thankful; I am having fun while I work.
Q: Since your emergence on the Soca scene you have had success with your music. How has the experience been for you as a Soca artiste?
A: My journey has been awesome! I thank God everyday.
Q: Internationally, who are you musically inspired by?
A: I am inspired by the music from Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, James Brown, Kendrick Lamar and Linkin Park.
Q: You have a unique sense of style; have you always been involved in fashion?
A: Yes, I have.
Q: Are there any Caribbean Soca artistes that inspire you?
A: Edwin Yearwood, Machel Montano and Kes inspire me.
Q: In your opinion, what has been the high point of your career to date?
A: One is becoming a finalist in the Sweet Soca competition in 2016 and the second is having an audience sing the lyrics of one of my songs aloud.
Q: What advice would you have for young males who are thinking about joining the entertainment arena?
A: Be positive, focused and determined and set high standards or yourself.
