Seven new faces will be joining the Scotiabank Junior Monarch competition this year.
There are six first-timers in the 7-12 age group and one first-timer in the 13-18 age group.
The competition is expected to be intense as the defending champions have aged out of their categories and the number of participants has increased. The 7-12 Monarch Kiara Mhizz Kibabba Carrington will be contending in the 13-18 category which was won last year by Teri Sparkle T Williams.
When registration closed on April 20, the Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch Programme in association with IGM Stage Lighting showed a record number of 48 contenders in the 7-12 category, a 50 per cent increase on the previous year, while there was a marginal increase to 30 competitors in the 13-18 category up from 21.
The results in the preliminary round revealed that three tied for ninth place in the 7-12 category and two tied for 12th place in the 13-18 category.
This year’s crop of new and returning hopefuls chosen as the 2018 semi-finalists will have their first public showcase before the actual semi-final on Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 24 at the Lester Vaughan and Combermere Schools respectively. (KK)
