The Barbadian culinary team is looking to do the double this year as it travels to Miami for the annual Taste of the Caribbean competition.
After winning gold in the competition last year the Barbados culinary team will be leaving on Wednesday morning with the hope of bringing home the bacon once again.
The Taste of the Caribbean, organized by the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association will take place from 22nd to the 26th June 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Miami.
The conference will give participants the opportunity to network, polish their professional skills and cheer on colleagues in competition, before a large audience of industry peers and food & beverage veterans, and give insights on how to build a food and beverage business. The team was gifted with tablets and other equipment by the sponsors, which included Standard and Kola Tonic.
Training Manager Henderson Butcher named the team at a media conference at the Divi Southwinds Beach Resort this morning.
Butcher said, “I am comfortable with the level of participation of the chefs this year and with the mind-sets of where they are supposed to be… It’s been a wonderful training session. Some days were better than [others]. We are at this point and we are ready for competition, the team is locked and loaded.”
He added that the process of preparing for the competition was developmental and covered more than cooking, “It’s getting to know one another and cooking and performing.”
Newly appointed Chairman of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association Stephen Austin wished the team good luck in his brief remarks and pledged the association’s support while encouraging the team to tap into their passion and grow in their craft.
“They know that this is their passion and that this is what they are going to continue to do for the rest of their lives. I believe we will come back with gold and we look forward to welcoming this team home with all gold medals,” Austin said.
He also explained that when the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. named this year as the Year for Culinary Experiences, it was done to coincide with the team’s departure.
The full team includes: Kiara Riley, Rodney Corbin, Willis Griffith, Derio Boyce, Shanese Phoenix, Nicholas Ifill, Javon Cummins, Jamal Whittaker, Alexander Chandler.
