Not only did Awaken Ultra Premium All-Inclusive move from Kendall Sporting Complex in St Philip to a new elevated, scenic location, but organizers of the annual breakfast fete raised the quality of the event by a few notches.
Last Sunday morning, from 4 a.m. to the end of the last song the DJ played at 11:35 a.m., patrons indulged in endless food, drink, snacks and alcohol at the Featherbed Estate, St John. On offer was the usual wide selection of breakfast items, along with roast breadfruit, sliders, burgers and Chinese food. Popcorn and other snacks were also there for the taking. The bar was solid, serving juices, soda, and water. A snow cone vendor was on hand by the time a few of the sun’s rays started beaming.
The morning was mainly overcast with intermittent showers but that did not stop the jammers as DJ Daddy Fabian did an excellent job in keeping the party atmosphere going. He blended the perfect amount of local soca hits with tunes from our Caribbean counterparts in Trinidad, St Vincent, St Lucia and Antigua.
Adding to that “premium” food service was a nice Crop Over vibe which saw live performances from Hypasounds, Fadda Fox, and Faith.
While making our rounds, Bajan Vibes overheard one patron say: “This is my first time and I ain’t stand up in no long lines for food, so yuh know I coming back.”
Her sentiment was true. There were no long lines. No hustling, bustling, pushing or fighting for food as experienced at other all-inclusive events.
“I am happy with the response. I was happy with the patronage since the crowd was bigger than last year. I believe once you work and push hard, you will get what is deserving,” said event promoter Tremayne Austin, adding that they had stepped up their game this year.
“It was a lot more costly to stage this year, however, it was necessary as it was important to enhance the quality of the event. The change of venue was a success and the feedback from the patrons was great. I would say 95 per cent of what we wanted done on the day was executed. In my books that is flawless as the world isn’t perfect.”
Meanwhile, veteran entertainer Terencia TC Coward-Thompson, who is a member of the new look Awaken committee, used Sunday’s event to celebrate her 50th birthday.
Surrounded by close friends and loved ones, she gave an emotional speech before cutting her cake and having a toast in an elevated tent constructed for the special occasion.
“I want to thank all of you guys for being here today. I want you all to know that each and every one of you in your own way is important to me. I gine cuss yuh, but I love yuh. Even if I don’t wake up Tuesday morning, I want all of you’ll to know I love you all,” she said amid tears.
She had earlier reminisced about her brother who died at age 22, saying it was a privilege to mark the milestone.
TC singled out her close friend and manager Sonia Mullins for praise for staying by her side and being with her ‘through thick and thin’.
“She has supported me all the way and backed me in everything I have done. Thank you Sonia, for putting up with [me],” she said. (IMC)
