I am passionate about literacy, but today’s article is not about the ability to read. It deals with the link between organizational success and reading. Business moguls like Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Warren Buffett and Bill Gates support the daily reading habit. Read on, if you wish!
You may not be an avid reader and may even dislike reading, but remember, cultivating good habits is always beneficial. Here are some reasons why (just in case I have to convince you) reading is good for you as a leader, entrepreneur or professional:
1. It relaxes you and removes some of the stress from your body. A mind that escapes from the everyday mechanics of repetitive work and constant interactions with the same personality types is allowed to run free when reading. This stimulates even more creativity for the days ahead.
2. You learn from industry leaders. One book that helped me years ago when running an organization from an operational standpoint was The Toyota Way. Insights and strategies based on experience were necessary for me to save time and move forward. Surely, the power of the page can help you too!
3. Indulge your interests. Leaders must not only be confined to industry-specific writings but expand their knowledge base. One of the most stimulating ways to do this is by reading. Biographies, essays, even poetry can give cognitive stimulation which leads to a higher level of creativity.
