The third edition of Golden Soca will feature a selection of music that spans over 30 years of classic hits.
Producer Peter Boyce said the event which will be held at the Sea Rocks Dome on August 11 is a unique show because, “Golden Soca is the only event which features old and new music, vintage music combined with music from Crop Over 2018.”
Speaking at the event launch press briefing, Boyce reported that the show received great reviews for its previous stagings. He said the production team is looking to come even better this year, “We got rave reviews last year and we took particular pains to have someone from the 50s, 70s, 80s, and 90s perform.”
Boyce said performers will include, Cultural Ambassadors RPB and Gabby, Peter Ram, Lil Rick, Edwin, Gabby, Grynner, Hollabak, Shaquille, Hypa Sounds, Bumba, Speedy, and Malik.
While thanking the Barbados Association of Retired Person (BARP) and Carib Rehab for being on board since inception, he noted that he was finding it difficult to get sponsorship, “We consider these sponsors to be special. It is usually harder to get sponsors within the first year of [staging] an event, so when [we] just have an idea and there are sponsors who see the potential, are willing to come on board, take the risk and support the idea, they deserve a special mention.”
He attributed the reluctance of sponsors to the belief that older people don’t spend money on these types of events. “There is an apprehension for sponsors getting on board [because] when it comes to the younger demographic, they see them as [greater] consumers of alcoholic products. I can assure [you] that the older demographic also spend money,” he noted.
Also delivering brief remarks at the launch was Sales Manager of Carib Rehab Susan Hutchinson. “We are very pleased to be associated with the event again,” she said.
Hutchinson gave a glowing endorsement of the event: “The first year when I didn’t go other staff members came back and said what a raving success it was. I was quite upset. So last year when we decided to sponsor again, I immediately said I was going. We really enjoyed being a part of it and we are looking forward to this year.” Hollabak who is slated to perform said, “It is going to be very special for me to be sharing the stage with guys that were in the business with hits before I was even born. I am coming out to do my best and do a wonderful job.”
