Police, soldiers and firefighters engaged in a frantic effort to recover the body of a middle-aged man from a well at Cottage, St George late Monday.
The drama began with a report to the District ‘B’ Police Station at Boarded Hall of a car suspiciously parked along a track in a bushy area off the main road, police said.
Officers went to the junction of Cottage Road and Market Hill, around 2 p.m. There, they discovered someone in a well next to the parked car.
A team of a two-dozen firefighters and soldiers and two fire tenders responded to scene just after 5 p.m.
Rescue efforts appeared to have been hampered by the terrain, the depth of the farm well, and fears it could collapse on the trapped man.
Relatives of the victim identified the body of the man, said to be 50 years old, around 11:30 p.m.
However, police declined to release his identity pending further notification of next-of-kin.
Police at District ‘B’ are investigating the incident as an unnatural death, and have appealed to the public for assistance on the case.
