Fay M. Burke is the new chairperson of the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium board while Terrance Applewhaite is her deputy.
Burke, a senior application consultant at CIBC FirstCaribbean, has worked in the local entertainment industry as an artiste manager. She has served as Youth Representative on the National HIV/AIDS Commission, Bureau of Gender Affairs and The Barbados Museum & Historical Society. She has also represented Barbados regionally and internationally.
The new chair holds an MSc. in International Marketing Management from the University of Surrey, and an LL.B from the University of Huddersfield, both in the United Kingdom. Applewhaite works in the automotive industry.
The other members of the board are: David Straughn a project manager, Frederick Alleyne (Attorney at Law); Ricardo St Hill (banking executive); Romel Sargeant (telecommunications specialist); Charlene Leacock (former basketball player); Peter Kirpalani (business executive); John Clarke (retired/former general manager of SuperCentre); Carl Thorpe (former national basketball point); and Deborah Payne, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports.
The appointments took effect from July 16 and are for a three-year period. (PR)
