There has been a noticeable increase in the number of people participating in the annual Clean Up Barbados campaign, project manager of the Future Centre Trust Ann Harding has said.
Over 1,000 volunteers gathered early this morning to clean up refuse as Barbados joined the rest of world in observing International Coastal Clean-up Day.
“There are a lot more people getting active to get up and pick up now,” said Harding who described the littering habits of locals as “insane”.
“We want people to realise that if they love Barbados they will not let that litter get out . . . they will stick it in their pockets, their backpacks . . . instead of just throwing it out the window,” Harding said.
The team which included persons from churches, charities, schools and Corporate Barbados, collected over 4,000 kilogrammes of waste.
Harding acknowledged that the sensitivity and awareness towards waste disposal was changing however, she maintained that is was still not enough as persons continued to litter along the island’s beaches and illegally dump garbage in gullies.
“Barbados is the last island of gullies and if we don’t protect them and keep them clean then we end up with flooding and disease and [an] ugly, smelly Barbados. So we have to stop that and people have to be called out [on] this unacceptable behavior.
“Nobody that loves Barbados would throw down litter and nobody that loves this country would dump illegally in the gullies. It needs everybody to get behind it. The police can’t be everywhere and do everything some people have to say this is wrong stop it,” she added. (KK)

Like music to my ears, I’m very proud to see that we are taking this effort of a United clean up campaign. I’ve always said regardless if you’re poor is not excuse to litter or keep your surroundings dirty. We are on the right track to making a difference for our country and those who visit and seeing a beautiful country with beautiful people living in harmony. Our next goal I pray would be to get the drugs,Guns and violence off our streets then we’ve really concurred the garbage in our mixed.
Next in line on a “clean-up-campaign” are all the vacant lots that overgrown and breeding grounds for “rats, Mice, lizards, mosquitoes and centipede along all other kind of pests/insects that cause havoc to persons living near by.
Why don’t we do a clean-up on all of them , then send an “INVOICE” to the owner to be paid in full in 2 weeks or property will be seize by Town & Country Planning.
This will be some “nice work for the fellas in DODDS” to be out in the SUN and doing some WORK.
“LISTEN UP YA ALL, A NEW DRIVER IN THE SEAT” .
Making BARBADOS beautiful………again.
1000 volunteers cleaning up the garbage left by 10, 20,30, 50 or more thousands of indiscriminate litters.
Good for them, but I dun wid that. I used to do it willingly but realized that I was not a part of the problem and some of us are obviously not making the change.
When I pass Warrens tomorrow I will see lots of coconut shells per usual. That is how serious we are. The vendors are known but they are allowed to do the nonsense over and over.
That is just one example of what pertains on this little island of ours.
Congratulations. But, why not make it an event more than once a year. Tourists might like to help out too.
With regard to the prior comment about coconut shells, why not have a compost collection to build up gardening soil ?
Coconut shells are used by SBRC for compost which is sold. The most disheartening thing is a lack of enforcement of laws to prosecute. We have repeatedly made representation to the powers that be and they have ignored the call. Persons caught are not prosecuted only made to clean up. The Future Centre Trust will not lose hope as someday our country will get it right before its too late.
I have been reliably informed that clusters of rotted panties and used pampers labeled HT (Harry Turnover), were discovered in the garbage clean up efforts.
That is a total disgrace. A total disgrace!
JOHNNY CROW: Not a nice comment. Do not sink to HARRY TURNOVER level.
Agree with Tennyson there. HTO is just here as a troll and he has pulled you in.
JOHNNY CROW
I have been reliably informed etc etc
The same kind of comments we heard prior to May 25,2018.
Barbados is a beautiful island but it needs to be taken care of by its residents. It’s not enough to brag that you love Barbados but
do not show it.Stop throwing your garbage around it looks Ugly.
too bad i’m @ 2 north pole if i was in BIM for sure i’ll be there too lend a hand, love BIM and all bajans should do there very best too keep it clean @ all times ,like someone said it should be more than once a year
As a tourist I am very disappointed to see the garbage that is strewn around this island, especially the lack of property being taken care of, that is somewhere you can fine the property owners. Get it together! Go after the property owners. They leave their properties in shambles. Up for sale and not taken care of. Major properties I say. Its disgusting. That’s revenue that can be taken in. I see the garbage is picked up regularly. That’s good. But there is so much more to do. And a lot of it is with the property owners. I am not sure I will ever come back because of the way the garbage and disregard for property and littering is.
