Fifteen dollars worth of marijuana hidden in his shoe prevented a 22-year-old man from sailing the high seas on his first pleasure cruise over the weekend.
Instead Akeem McNeal Justin Cumberbatch of Rock Hall, St Lucy landed himself in police custody on Sunday night and before Magistrate Douglas Frederick on Monday charged with possession of the illicit drug.
The prosecutor revealed that security personnel were searching patrons attending the Jolly Roger cruise on September 16
when Cumberbatch was asked to remove his shoes. As he did so a wrapping fell out containing the vegetable matter and police were called in.
“I just got caught up in the moment [it was] my first time going on a cruise,” the first time offender, who admitted he started smoking when he left school, told the magistrate today.
Frederick pointed out that he was a St Lucy man who had “come to town to get into trouble.
“Don’t you know people get caught all the time? They have this thing down-pack, you can’t get on these vessels without getting caught,” the magistrate told Cumberbatch before he ordered that the offender complete 80 hours of community service.
His criminal record will remain unblemished if he does the service satisfactorily.
“This is a golden opportunity for you to grab with both hands,” Frederick told the young man before adjourning the case until December 4.
