WIRSPA, the representative association for regional rum producers, is launching an initiative to promote responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages.
Komal Samaroo, Chairman of WIRSPA and Demerara Distillers Limited noted that while individual producers support efforts to reduce harmful drinking at the national level, they cannot ignore the negative impact excessive consumption of alcohol has on society.
He said WIRSPA intends to intensify those efforts this year. “We have established a task force to look at a range of issues including labelling, advertising and promotion, and online marketing, incorporating international best practice. We will also encourage and support actions to reduce driving under the influence of alcohol and drinking by underage and vulnerable persons.”
Raphael Grisoni, Managing Director of Mount Gay Distilleries and Head of the Barbados Rum Distillers Committee stated, “As Barbados rum distillers, our first priority is to bring together all importers and distributors in the alcohol sector. We all have a responsibility to ensure our products are promoted, sold and consumed in a way that is not harmful to health.”
A public statement issued by the grouping in July, which strongly condemned alcohol abuse, noted that the grouping is committed to ensuring the safe and responsible consumption of alcohol and to involve producers, distributors and retailers in addressing this issue.
The statement also acknowledged the impact of inappropriate consumption on both individuals and society, of a range of alcoholic beverages. (PR)
