Personnel from the Barbados Defence Force, the Barbados Fire Service and the Roving Response Team have been conducting rescue efforts in several communities across Barbados as heavy rains and gusty winds from Tropical Storm Kirk pound the island.
Disaster officials report that several areas in the parishes of Christ Church, St Philip and the capital Bridgetown have been hard hit.
Home Affairs Minister Edmund Hinkson in a brief update this evening said several people have been trapped in their homes and cars as flood waters rise. He however disclosed that no injuries have been reported.
Minister Hinkson said a number of Category 1 shelters are opened. These include the St Ambrose Primary School in Bridgetown, Hilda Skeene Primary School in St Philip, the Christ Church Foundation School and the Dalkeith Methodist Church in St Michael.
He appealed to Barbadians who need help to contact the Department of Emergency Management at 438- 7575 , Police Emergency at 211 or the Barbados Fire Service at 311 to report damage or to receive assistance.
