A 24-year-old carpenter, who was found with cannabis while on a pleasure cruise in Barbados’ territorial waters, must be on his best behaviour for the next 12 months.
If Devon Remario King, of Farmers, St Thomas, breaches the bond imposed by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant he will have to pay the court $2,000 forthwith. If he cannot pay the fine he will have to spend four months in prison.
King was aboard the cruise on October 7 when security officials approached after he was observed putting something suspicious in his pocket. He, however, told security they could not search him as they were not police officers. The police were then informed, a search was conducted with his consent and the contraband was found. He was subsequently charged with possession, possession with intent to supply and trafficking of cannabis.
His attorney Akelia Reid in mitigating on his behalf told the magistrate among other things that her client was remorseful for his actions.
The magistrate then imposed the bond on King, who is already known to the court, on the grounds that this was “to encourage you not to break the law. So you are being given another chance”.
