As a sickening, sewage-like stench continues to plague the Barbados Statistical Department, the office will be closed Thursday for an environmental inspection and cleaning, acting director Aubrey Browne has told Barbados TODAY.
“The decision has been made to close the office tomorrow Thursday to allow the property management and the investigation team to do a full inspection of the ceiling in our office space of the Barbados Statistical Department so that they can try to identify the source of the problem we have been encountering,” Browne said.
“The work cannot be done when persons are in the office so a decision was taken that we will close the office for one day and have that work conducted an arrangement would be made to clean the office space so that we can resume work on the following day,” he said.
But the Government’s data collection and analysis service has only received clearance from Civil Service managers for a one-day closure.
“We only made arrangements to close for one day. My understanding is that the investigative work should be completed in half-a-day so it should not stop the operations from continuing the next day and it depends on what they find,” Browne said.
“We will be giving a press release . . . to all the news media so the travelling public know that the building is being closed tomorrow.
He confirmed that workers were on the job today but had not complained about the pungent odour, which workers told Barbados TODAY has been occurring periodically for the last two years.
