Sion Hill fire victims relocated: Hinkson

The family of eight whose Brathwaite’s Gap, Sion Hill, St James home was burned on Friday now have a new place of abode.

The family has received assistance from Member of Parliament for St James North, Edmund Hinkson, and Lucille Baird, the priest in charge of the Mount Zion’s International Inc.

The confirmation came from Hinkson who spoke with Barbados TODAY on the sidelines of the Barbados Prison Service church service held at Breath of Life, Whitehall, St Michael on Sunday.

He said the family had been relocated to Rock Dundo, St James.

“The family, whose house has been completely burnt, have been accommodated since Friday night to 4th Avenue, Rock Dundo. The good offices of Mount Zion Missions Church, which is a church located in that avenue, they have organized for the rental accommodations for them for the time being,” he said, adding that the other family whose house was damaged by the fire have also received temporary accommodations.

“I have visited them yesterday evening as well as the other household that would have been affected and particularly damaged. Luckily, the other household have a family house that they are staying in for the time being,” Hinkson said, stating that both families would need assistance.

The Minister is appealing to civil society to help in this regard.

“I mean the house that was completely burnt had eight persons living in it including a young child . . . and they can use all the assistance that civil society would give them,” he said.

“Social welfare has assisted but that is limited. They were in good spirits when I visited them yesterday they would have settled in well and obviously, I have assisted in this effort,” Hinkson said. (LG)
