Delighted by the world-famous Argentine Malbec wines, a group of international key players in agriculture gathered at a cocktail reception at the Embassy of Argentina in Bridgetown to share views and exchange ideas on agribusiness and technical cooperation.
The host, Argentine Ambassador Gustavo Martinez Pandiani, expressed his gratitude to Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of Barbados Indar Weir and highlighted the contributions made by Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Manuel Otero, to enhance the ties between Latin America and CARICOM. He also recognized the presence of Undersecretary of Livestock of Argentina Rodrigo Troncoso who specially travelled to Barbados to participate in the “Caribbean Week of Agriculture”, as a token of Argentina’s commitment to regional integration.
Ambassador Pandiani described Argentina as “A traditional agricultural country, ready to collaborate in the food sovereignty plans of the region.” In that regard, he presented a package of new cooperation projects to be implemented soon in coordination with the Government of Barbados: soil recovery, water harvesting, phytosanitary control systems, and fish waste treatment. He endorsed the views of IICA Director Manuel Otero who stated that “Involving and training the youth in agriculture technology is of paramount importance to create more resilient and self-sufficient societies.”
Meanwhile, the Argentine Undersecretary of Livestock announced that his Government will host a Regional Cooperation Agribusiness Workshop next November, specially designed for Caribbean countries. Two representatives of Barbados´ Ministry of Agriculture were invited by the Argentine authorities to travel to Buenos Aires for the seminar.
Minister Weir thanked the ambassador for the initiatives to be carried out and further made a call to all sectors involved in rural development and food safety to play a supporting role in these challenging times that Barbados and the world are facing.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador Pandiani addressed the representatives of CARICOM, CARDI, FAO, OAS, and CDB, among others, saying, “I’m very glad that you enjoyed some of the best Argentine Wines at this reception. Next, I would love for you to be able to enjoy the delicious Argentine beef.” (PR)
