Jonathan Drakes scored an attacking 78 runs off 98 balls and Amir Jangoo made 62 to help Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) Marooners defeat Barbados Pride by 125 runs in their day/night Regional Super50 match at Kensington Oval last night.
Drakes and Jangoo posted a third-wicket partnership of 104 that laid the foundation for CCC’s total of 259 for 7 after the Pride won the toss and elected to field.
Drakes who was named the Man of the Match batted at number four, he faced 98 balls and struck six fours, his half-century came from 72 balls and included six fours. Drakes, the seventh batsman to be dismissed was caught at deep midwicket by Dominic Drakes off medium-pacer Jonathan Carter in the fiftieth over.
Jangoo, a left-hander faced 76 balls for his 62 runs which included three fours and two sixes, before he was caught by Leniko Boucher at extra-cover off medium pacer Shamar Springer in the 41st over, by then the score was 199 for three and the CCC Marooners were on the path of making a total that turned out to be beyond Barbados Pride.
CCC Marooners were given a rapid start by openers left-hander Kjorn Ottley and Kyle Corbin who posted an opening partnership of 71 in 10 overs. Their partnership was broken by left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn who bowled Corbin for 18. After Corbin’s dismissal medium pacer Kevin Stoute in conjunction with Benn restricted the strokeplay of the CCC’s batsmen.
Benn bowled a stingy spell of 10 overs, 2 maidens, one wicket, 20 runs. Springer was the most successful bowler with three wickets for 48 runs from eight overs, while Stoute took two wickets for 40 runs from 10 overs.
Chasing 260 to win, Barbados Pride were bowled out for 134 in 35.1 overs after the batsmen were tied up by left-arm spinner Yannick Ottley who ripped out the top order with three wickets for 24 from 10 overs.
They were in trouble from the second over of their innings when Kevin Stoute had his middle stump uprooted by off-spinner Jon-Russ Jaggesar for two. The Pride stumbled to 17 for two in the fifth over when Shayne Moseley was caught at the wicket by Jangoo of fast bowler Akeem Jordan for eight.
It was all over for the Pride after they slumped to 68 for five after seventeen overs. Carter top-scored with 26, captain Shamarh Brooks made 20, Boucher contributed 19, and Springer was 21 not out. After Ottley tangled up the Pride top order, the CCC captain Carlos Brathwaite took three wickets for 12 runs to wrap up the innings. This massive defeat by CCC Marooners ended the Pride chances of making it into the Super50 semi-finals.
