The tight-knit St Peter family of Juan Waldron has suffered the loss of their matriarch.
Walrond, who served with the Royal Barbados Police Force for 35 years, celebrated her 54th birthday on October 20 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, succumbing to a brief illness shortly thereafter
Her only son Kyle Blackman told Barbados TODAY he would truly miss his mother as an only child.
“She was a nice person, kind to everyone, a real easy going person. She was someone that everybody liked. She was conservative,” he said.
“I would miss everything about her as it was just me, my father and her.”
He remembered going with her frequently to hear her play with the Royal Barbados Police Force Band.
“I used to move around with the band sometimes when they go out to different concerts in different communities. I would be sitting at the back playing the [drum instruments],” Blackman fondly recalled.
He said his mother was also involved in sports and played netball for the Royal Barbados Police Force before moving to the BICO Netball Club.
Blackman told Barbados TODAY that his mother created history when she became the first female Sergeant in the Royal Barbados Police Force Band and then the first female Station Sergeant.
Walrond played the flute and received an award in 2014 for her three decades of service.
Blackman told us his mother’s life was one of dedication to the Royal Barbados Police Band as well as to her disabled mother.
He said he has now assumed the care of his grandmother.
He said his mother was also dedicated to ensuring her family was happy.
Blackman shared memories with Barbados TODAY of him and his mother making pastries and said this was one of the things he learned from her as she made delicious sweet bread, cakes and muffins.
Another talent he believed he inherited from her was playing the flute. Blackman said he had a natural gift for the instrument, the same one his mother played for 35 years.
“She always told me that I should be further with it because I make it look so easy. She told me that I should have continued with it,” he reflected.
Blackman said his one regret was not producing any children before his mother died.
Juan Walrond leaves to mourn her spouse Leonard Blackman, son Kyle Blackman and adopted daughter Selena Elcock.
