Home / Earthquake / USGS records earthquake off St Philip
An earthquake occurred off the coast of Barbados this morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
USGS said the magnitude 6.3 quake occurred at 9:04 a.m. (local time).
It was located at Latitude: 15.56N, Longitude: 49.86W and at a depth of 7.3 km.
The quake occurred at 1068 km (663.3 miles) WSW of Crane, Saint Philip and 1086 km (674.9 miles) WSW of Bridgetown.
I en feel nutin.
That’s still too close for my comfort
Lord please cover us
This soooo far had me scared there for a moment
Dear God have mercy on us here
Most ppl feel these days is their phone vibrating.
Isn’t off st Phillip really off Barbados? They trying to say st Philip is its own island? Smh
1) No where near us
2) unless Barbados moved since I moved, we are WSW of the quake, not the other way around. Barbados I 13.1 degrees N and 59. 5 degrees W.
Why bajans so stupid off st Philip means what it means are we not close to Trinidad we does just doubt everything it’s not every quake or tremmor that we will feel but they ate detected by machines that monitor
Bajans need to wake up and stop disbelieving that nothing will nevertheless happen
Who vex vex
Shoddy journalism !
The castle beach landscape has changed dramatically within the last 4 yrs with ocean floor uprising and cliff hanging.
Barbados Today, please get the info correct..isn’t there anyone there to read over before publishing?
More earthquakes will come owing to that planetary magnetic pull.
Am I reading right? Heard nothing in the news.
For some wives, the only time the bed gets a good rocking ,is when an earthquake happens. You know what I mean. There are many couples whom people believe are successful and flying high, but that is all a showme. The marriage relationship is in shambles; the dog dead; the cat does not purr anymore.’
Time to move out and on without spite or grudges. Lawyers will keep your wickets.
Probably the H.A.R.P. gun return to life.
Getting like trump supporters here. Yes the headline is misleading but it’s clarified when u READ the article. As in the quake was recorded from the st Phillip side of the island Barbados smh
If I can remember my two bits of Geography correctly all the article is saying is that St Phillip was the closest parish to where the quake was actually recorded. Just stating facts.
Drilling for oil at sea will bring some more if that is still on the cards.
When the earth gets tired of us it will take us out; simple as that. Take good care of earth and it will do the same for us.
It’s all about balance; not greed.
Hello Jennifer. How are you?
All to Jesus nothing don’t have to happen and it can hit us so hard he has so much control over us that all of us can die 1 or 2 or no body at all heyyyyyyyyyy Jesus is believe in you.
I suppose they meant we were the closest Island to the earthquake
Pray for protection from all Natural disasters. Earthquake are no joke. I have experienced some serious shakes in California. There is no where to run and hide.
Two errors … we are (minus) -4 hours behind UTC/GMT/Z so 14:03:59 UTC was actually at 10:04 AM local time and the earthquake is actually ENE of Barbados … and Barbados is WSW of the earthquake.
At a low depth of 7.3 km (or 10 km as per USGS) and so far away. like two-thirds the distance from here to Jamaica (now I didn’t say it was in Jamaica’s direction, just given an idea of the distance), it is unlikely we would have felt much if at all.
i got news flash and that was all here in St Lucia,i thought our news team should have followed up and given updates
@ Sheron – Good afternoon. well thanks.
@Belfast – listen hun, this ain’t no haarp, blue beam, hydron collider, geo engineering etc. The same thing which got the sky red on sunrise and sunset causing the increase in earthquakes. We need to put down those mobile and look up.
WHere did that report come from ?…at 15.56 N 49.86 W that would mean that it occurred to the ENE of Barbados and the ISLAND would have to be WSW of the centre.
For the quake to have occurred 1068 km (663.3 miles) WSW of Crane, Saint Philip and 1086 km (674.9 miles) WSW of Bridgwtownit would have had to be near 70 degrees west and to the south of Jamaica..
At that Latitude 15.56 N, St.Philip would NOT have been the CLOSEST PARISH….St.LUCY would have been, then St.Andrew,St.JOSEPH,St.John.
How does those coordinates equate to WSW of The Crane St. Philip?
NOT GOOD!! Protect this Blessed Island.!!
Weather or not its close we all need to be aware of our surroundings and constant earthquake activity and the precautionary measures to take in the event of a serious one.
Many times because something does hit us directly, or is sitting right on our doorsteps, we either tend to ignore it, or we find every conceivable thing to say discredit the reports.
The thing is even if the earthquake occurred well to the east of us, let not forget that this area is a deep trench area and any sudden collapse of any great magnitude can have catastrophic results if a such an occurrence were to happen because of the potential for widespread tsunami outflows. And we are a very flat island with several beaches. Lets be more thankful and prayerful rather than just seek to put down every report.
If Bajans had felt the tremors of this earthquake, today Sunday, whether it came at 9 o’clock or 10 o’clock, every church in Barbados would have become packed like sardine cans,in spite of the rain.
I can’t love any closer to crane and can safely say this didn’t happen #getyourinfotogether
